Dushanbe is Tajikistan’s largest city and capital, situated in the Hissar Valley of south-central Tajikistan.
Built on a valley floor, it contrasts with the surrounding mountainous terrain that covers most of the country.
The city functions as the main urban center for Tajikistan, where fewer than a third of the population live in urban areas. Dushanbe International Airport (DYU) links it to the region, and the city is a practical base for day trips west to Varzob Valley and the Hisor area. Each spring, the city hosts Nowruz celebrations, marking the Persian New Year.
